A post to begin our GDA Blog:
The Journey of a dream
By Gisella Ferreira
Owner and Director of Global Dance Arts
Global Dance Arts is a dream. It's a vision that I didn't dare to see until about a year ago when I awakened to a time for growth. My thoughts were limited to the life of a struggling dancer, I never thought I would need or desire to have my own, I never believed it would be possible.
You see when you are a dancer, you feel with your body, and it was not until my body and soul was broke down that I began to listen to what my soul was manifesting.
All my life my father had told me one day I would have my own studio...as if that would be a dream I would want, but I never wanted to own a studio. I wanted to dance and that was it. It was not until I no longer had a space to dance and practice in, that I realized the importance of creating a space for dancers, artists, and movers. You see it was not until my team Samba Soul and I were trying to find a space to practice and grow that I realized the importance of creating a supportive space for the arts.
I went through a time of deep inward reflection, a time of painful depression and then eventually I moved into self realization and inspiration. That was one of the most challenging times I have known. I remember sitting on the beach in the summer one day and realizing I could no longer continue in the cycle I was in of giving every day in a way that was not supporting my growth as an artist and young woman. I had a vision of myself taking flight as a butterfly after a long time in the cocoon, ready to transform and spread my wings for the world to see. But how?
I felt I had to make a change in the way I saw myself and in what I wanted for myself, I realized that I needed to serve the community in a more holistic way and give my service in a larger capacity.
I was not sure what it would look like at first, I just knew I needed to search and make a change.
I started meditating more often and getting clear on my vision and then took the steps to really make it happen. I had to change my thoughts to grow and change my energy. I went from thinking "impossible" to " Go for it." And then boom I found a place that fit the vision and inspired me to really create a space for the arts, wellness and community.
We opened our doors in Marina Del Rey April 1st, 2016, just 6 months ago. We opened with a huge party with live drumming, and cultural dance from all over the world. It was the night the dream started to really become a beautiful reality. All kinds of people from all over LA came together to celebrate with us and dance the night away. I say "We", as I share this story, as it is thanks to all the incredibly supportive members of the GDA community that we are open. Global Dance Arts belongs to all the dancers, musicians, yogis, artists and lovers of GDA that support us and keep us moving, and boy do we move!
In the past 6 months we have held daily classes for the community in Samba, Salsa, Zumba, Yoga, Music, Belly Dance, Dancehall, Fitness, Hip-Hop, Beyoncé, Woman Empowerment, Wellness and Meditation as well as thrown an art show and two fantastic Opening parties where we gave our space and energy to our community. Plus our latest Samba Soul parties where we now get to share our Samba school of dance! It has been an amazing journey so far with a few bumps along the way, but thankfully we are learning and growing. It is not easy being a new business, and I can honestly say that nobody knows or understands how difficult it is until they do it. It's also one of the most rewarding experiences I have had so far...meeting new people and welcoming them into our space and spreading the joy that is our essence here.
Every day at Global Dance Arts brings new light and inspiration. I'm grateful to all who walk in the door and support us. I love seeing the looks on peoples faces when they walk in. And I will never forget the day my best friend came in for the first time and just started balling...as she has been with me through my most challenging times and felt the joy of the space as she came in. Our space is very special. It holds an energy that is very rare and is felt when you walk in the door. It's something you can't just find anywhere. It's a feeling that comes over you of pure loving energy.
Every time when you come and join us for a dance or an event you are part of the magic and you help us to keep on. When you come in you are not only supporting a local Latina woman owned business, and a place for the arts in Marina Del Rey, you are supporting so much more...it's a global vision of unity through celebration of arts and culture. I truly believe that when we have a healthy place to express ourselves through the arts, we are able to unite in a way that creates a ripple of energy and inspiration for others across the world to do the same. It's about a global impact. When we embrace our diversity through the arts, we create connection, honor and appreciation which brings harmony and helps us to align in oneness. So again thank you for your support, thank you for believing in the vision of Global Dance Arts our local movement, wellness, community of friends. For those that are reading this and have not come in yet, I encourage you to check out our new studio and to join us in our journey of community. We welcome you all and are here to serve as a space for the community to grow and spread joy.
In oneness, Ashé, Peace and Blessings
